Six Characters in Search of an Author, Right You Are (if you think so). We also staged two more Pirandellian theatre festival, one streaming (during the lockdown, entitled Il sipario di vetro (The Glass Curtain)) and another more recent one that we brought with great success to Avellino. Cap and Bells is one of the many works by Pirandello that explore the central themes of his poetics (there is no better madman in the world than those who believe they are right), highlighting how social conventions force individuals to wear a mask, even at the cost of sacrificing their own happiness. Pirandello chooses an emblem with a strong impact, represented by that headdress used by court jesters (the cap and bells), as a metaphor for public disgust. To what extent are you willing to tolerate not to suffer from it? What are you ready to give up in order to keep up appearances? What is the price of serenity and what is the price of truth? In this work Pirandello manages to highlight the complexity of the human soul and social dynamics through the extraordinary invention of the "three strings" (or three selves): the social self, the serious self and the insane self. Depending on the circumstances, a person uses one of the three from time to time to balance themselves in the intricate web of society's unwritten rules. The choice of the text in the Agrigento dialect – an arduous challenge for the actors – is dictated by the need to regain possession of what is the purest expressive force of Pirandello's writing. This is the expressive force that is found especially in his short stories, such as Certi obblighi (Certain Obligations) or La verità (The Truth), from which Pirandello then gives birth to this script. I borrowed the first of the two for a prologue that would allow me to stage "the others", which is the society that watches, judges and sentences. (Vittorio Bonaccorso)

Plot: The story revolves around Beatrice Fiorica, a woman tormented by jealousy for her husband, the knight Fiorica, whom she suspects is involved in an extramarital affair with Sarina, the young wife of the scribe Don Nociu. Determined to expose the betrayal, Beatrice devises a plan to have them caught red-handed in adultery by the authorities and denouncing them. Don Nociu, aware of the relationship, has so far tolerated the situation to safeguard his "pupo" (his social self), his honor. He tries to convince Beatrice to give up, explaining to her the theory of the three zones (strings) that each individual possesses, but Beatrice proceeds with her plan. Her husband and Sarina are caught together and arrested, causing a scandal that discredits all the families involved. To solve the situation, Don Nociu proposes a paradoxical solution: to pass Beatrici off as crazy. In this way, his gesture would be attributed to madness, and everyone's honor would be saved. Beatrice, initially reluctant, is convinced to accept this solution and is admitted to a nursing home for a few months. The play ends with a bitter laugh from Don Nociu, reflecting the desperation and absurdity of the situation.
