The positions found here are defensive trenches built for machine guns and mortars, part of a wider coastal defence system that also included bunkers.
Until 10 July 1943, the day of the Allied landing in Sicily, these trenches were garrisoned by the men of the 383rd Battalion, headquartered in Santa Croce Camerina, deployed between Punta Secca and the mouth of the Irminio River to defend the coast against enemy landings.
The battalion belonged to the 206th Coastal Division of the Royal Italian Army, responsible for approximately 120 km of Sicilian coastline, from Contrada Randello (RG) to the Maddalena Peninsula (SR).
