The city of the two Patrons

The city of the two Patrons The city of the two Patrons
Both the patronal feast of San Giorgio and that of San Giovanni Battista are included in the Register of Intangible Heritage of the Sicily Region.

The reason for this inscription lies in the "rich concomitance of ceremonial and ritual elements that testify to spectacular forms attributable to Baroque theatre."

San Giorgio is the patron saint of a thousand-year-old city - today's Ragusa Ibla - in which it has been recognized for centuries; Saint John is the new saint around whose cult the new city developed, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. Both cults coexist peacefully even if some residue of parochialism is hard to die.

And so, from the ancient disorders recorded during the processions of the two saints and the cases discussed in the religious tribunals from the 17th century, we reach the present day: the official pronouncement of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments is in May 2024 which officially recognized Saint John the Baptist as the main patron of the Diocese and the City of Ragusa, and Saint George as the patron "aeque principalis" of the same city.

The centuries advance but certain things do not change in the souls of a people. And this probably also has its unshakable charm which in the end is called identityExternal link
